Remember to check out the photo exhibition LIFE OF MY SISTERS, featuring Nepalese girls and their education, in aid of My Little Sisters Fund.

Match Report: Badminton

After one week of competition which comprised 3 matches, the HC badminton boy’s team has crossed the first hurdle and smashed their way through to the quarter-finals. The badminton team, has exuded resilience during several pressurizing moments. Here’s an overview of the 3 matches, which were held at Tampines Sports Hall:

Match 1: HCI vs ACS(Int’l)

This was the team’s first match, and they had to win it to keep their spirits up. Our boys did not disappoint and won the match 5-0. Wilson Dan, Chong Kai Qing and Chong Kai Ren swept the singles matches, while the pairings of Luke Lee/Siaw Kai Min and Jason Tan/Xia Shu Yang completed the rout.

Match 2: HCI vs IJC

Against Innova JC, the team rose to the occasion, triumphing 5-0. Wilson Dan, Chong Kai Qing and Chong Kai Ren won their singles matches, while the pairings of Luke Lee/Reuben Chan and Ray Tan/Raymond Lee emerged the better pairs of their matches.

Match 3: HCI vs DHS

Dunman High was the team’s main competitor for only 1 slot in the next round, and naturally, they were rather nervous at first. Winning this match would secure the team’s presence in the next round, and losing it would be disastrous. Hence the heat was on. In the first singles match, the team was given a slight scare as Wilson Dan lost despite a spirited battle.

Nevertheless, under the guidance of our coach, Mr Yeo, and the encouragements of our teacher I/C Mdm Yeo, we prevailed and fought back to win the match 4-1. Special mention to Chong Kai Qing whose effort fuelled the morale of the team, spurring them to win their matches. In the end, Chong Kai Qing and Chong Kai Ren (they are not brothers) won the other 2 singles matches, while the pairings of Luke Lee/Ray Tan and Reuben Chan/Raymond Lee won their matches.

The badminton team has achieved their temporary goal of entering the quarters, and will strive to get into the top 4 schools. Although this will require a great deal of effort due to intense competition, there is no doubt that they will do their best for the glory of Hwa Chong, the team and for the love of badminton.

Hello all!

HCunite has been a huge success since it started about 38 days ago, garnering close to 40,000 hits in this period of time.

Over this Labour day weekend, do not be alarmed at the lack of updates as we are labouring hard on an even bigger project for you guys, which will be launched on Monday when we head back to school, so do look out for it! :)

Also, to clarify some queries we have received, as much as we would want to cover all CCA activities and their achievements, we have to respect the wishes of the CCA Leaders, who may not want their's to be published here. But rest assured we will try out best to feature as many CCAs as we can!

Match Report: Netball HCI vs AJC

The HC Netball team started off shaky against AJC, and anyone on the sideline could tell that both teams were determined to win. As netball is an attacking game, scoring matters. Our shooters, Sharon Ng and Chua Kah Hsing, who played all 4 quarters despite persistent ankle injury, were sharp in their shots and the hours of shooting practices certainly paid off. Then again, Olivia Sulaeman's consistent passes made it easy for the shooters to put their shots up.

Our opponents were swift in their attack and were accurate in their shots. By the end of the first quarter, the Hwa Chong Netball team found themselves down by 1, with a score of 10-11. Despite playing in the pressence of many AJ supporters in the background, the Hwa Chong Netball team prevailed. As the saying goes "it's not over till the final whistle", we fought back hard, and eventually put in 7 more goals than our opponents, taking a lead of 23-17 by the end of the 2nd quarter. The team then went on to widening the margin by another 4 goals while our opponents pressed on in hopes for a change of tide. In the last quarter, the team continued to widen the margin by another 5 goals, culminating into the final score of 51-36.

The HC Netball team is now through to the Top 8 of our tournament and will be up against PJC (Monday 4th May), SRJC (Wednesday 6th May) and 2008 runner-ups ACJC (Friday 8th May). The team would appreciate your support for our round 2 matches :D So do feel free to come down!

Season Preview: Chinese Orchestra

The Hwa Chong Chinese Orchestra (HCCO) is one of the first CCAs to be set up in Hwa Chong. HCCO comprises more than 90 talented musicians from Singapore's top secondary school Chinese Orchestras who share a common goal to play music right from the heart. Currently, HCCO is under the baton of Dr Wei Yan Ming and Mr Lum Yan Seng, both renowned regional professional musicians who have had great contributions to the Chinese music scene.

For HCCO, performing is a regular business. Besides performing at school events like Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and Open House, HCCO has also received invitations to perform at external events, such as the Singapore Gardens Festival and the International Science Youth Forum. In addition, HCCO also holds a public concert every two years, themed 天籁回音.

On 6th May, HCCO will take part in the SYF, a competition where we have done well consistently in, by being the only JC orchestra to be awarded the prestigious Gold With Honours twice in a row. Facing strong competition this time, HCCO will work extremely hard to continue the tradition of excellence that our seniors have set for us. All the Best to HCCO!

Season Preview: Softball

The Hwa Chong Softball A Division Girls Team would be participating the the National Softball Championships next month, from 6th May to 27th May 2009.

As the defending champion for two consecutive years, the team has been striving hard for the past year, giving it our all in every training session to work on our areas of improvement and to reinforce our strengths, both individually and as a team. Having prepared ourselves both physically and mentally over the past few months, our team has the fire and desire to retain our championship title.

In March, the team took part in the Singapore Recreational Club's Annual Softball Carnival. After three weekends of competition, we emerged victorious against Raffles Institution (Junior College) with a tight score of 1-0.

Our team will continue to put our best into each of our remaining training sessions to retain our championship title. Do feel free to support the team at our upcoming matches over the course of May, especially during significant matches against VJC and RI(JC). The boys will play at 2.30pm, while the girls will play at 4.30pm. Your support is greatly appreciated!

The tennis girls maintained their perfect record for the season, when they beat MJC 5-0.

Also, the netball girls were triumphant against AJC, winning with a score of 51-36.

Match Report: Vball Boys HCI vs YJC

HC Volleyball Boys Team got off to a flying start for their campaign as they cruised to a 25 -7 25 - 6 straight sets victory. A sturdy defence and a clinical attack was what formed the foundation of this victory.

Ruiyang, Kian Keong, Lennis, Wincoln, Galvin, Melvin and Samuel started the first set. Despite several hiccups in the initial stages of the game with the score at 4-3, HC began pulling away with several excellent serves from Samuel. HC pulled away with Kian Keong linking up well with Melvin and Galvin. HC rarely needed to step up the gear to achieve victory. Samuel impressed with his intelligent play and the set was wrapped up by Ruiyang who sent a spike down the line.
Wholesale changes to the lineup were made in the second set with Glenn, Lennis, Kuan He, Zijie, Wincoln, Kenneth and Chen Xing playing. Several good serves by Kenneth coupled with impressive attacking play by Kuan He and Lennis saw HC race to a 5-0 lead. However this was eventually cut short due to a miscommunication between Glenn and Zijie which resulted in a stray ball landing on our court unsaved.HC quickly recovered with Glenn and Lennis linking up for a successful quick attack and started to pull away. Two successive blocks by Chen Xing and Zijie ensured that HC took a 7 point lead at 9-2. This lead was immediately extended by Kuan He who demonstrated his serving prowess, which created confusion among the YJC team as they simply had no answers for his jump floats which was hugely unpredictable in its flight patterns.

Chen Xing found himself in impressive form as his offensive blocks ensured that HC established an unassailable lead of 15-3. The YJC attack simply could not find a way past his outstretched arms as he single-handedly halted their attacking moves.

With the game at 19-4, HC refused to step off the pedal and pressed on for the win. The next point was won by Kenneth who sent a clinical spike following a quick attack by Chen Xing. He then completed his sterling performance with an ace serve to keep HC on course for victory.
The next game will be against TPJC next monday. Go Hwachong!

Hot off the press: Bball Girls/ Vball Boys/ Badminton Boys

The basketball girls team showed why they are genuine title contenders this year, when they beat Innova JC 95-8; and no, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. Having advanced to the next round, they will be up against SAJC, RIJC and NYJC then.

Meanwhile, the volleyball boys defeated Yishun JC in straight sets, 25-7 ,25-6. They were able to do so while utilising all 12 squad members. In particular, Blocker Yu Chen Xing proved to be an impenetrable wall with his numerous blocks while Subset Tan Ruiyang impressed with his lethal spikes.

The badminton boys team were also in top form in their first match of the season, when they defeat ACS (International) 5-0.

Season Preview: Volleyball

The volleyball team will kickstart their season TMR!

Boasting a team consisting of two national youth team players, the male volleyball team looks set to dominate the volleyball arena this coming season. With the team falling short of their targets in the 2008 season, the hunger and desire for success is growing within its team members who seek to win that elusive championship.

The team has been enduring gruelling trainings and friendly matches in preparation for the season. And the signs are positive for the team, which managed to defeat the likes of the experienced V Alliance (HCI Alumni) 5-2, the Men's Open champions International Kakis 4-3, as well as putting up a tough fight against Temasek Polytechnic, the 1st Runner-ups in the IVP Championships this year, and narrowly losing out again St Hilda's Secondary, the B Division National Champions, 4-3.

However, these matches and their scores do not accurately reflect the true standards of the team, for they were played in experimentation of various plays and strategies. Without a doubt, the volleyball team for now, will keep its head low and keep on training hard, in its bid to bring glory back home to where it rightfully belongs.

Season Preview: Harmonica

“The people, the love, the music.” The motto of the HC Harmonica Band is echoed firmly within each and every member, and this year we are out to soar to even greater heights. With the inclusion of newly-recruited J1s, we stand at a total strength of 88 band members – the largest since our establishment.

With the support and help from our instructor Mr Victor Tang and teacher-in-charge Mr Andrew Tan, HC Harmoc is gearing up for the upcoming SYF competition on 30th April, for which we have been preparing for since October last year. The band will be performing a lively Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, as well as The Pirates of the Caribbean Medley, from the soundtrack of the film Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Both pieces will also be featured in our upcoming concert.

We will be holding our annual concert at the High school Drama Centre come 1st June 2009. With a mix of classical and contemporary pieces, we look forward to you joining us for a memorable Windworks 2009. Remember to keep a look out for more from HC Harmonica!

Season Preview: OAC Bike Hike 2009

“Project Speedway – Velocity Redesigned” is a 100km overnight cycling event around Singapore jointly organised by the 34th Hwa Chong OAC and Tiong Bahru Youth Executive Committee and supported by Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee’s (SYOGOC) initiative, Create Action Now (CAN!).

It entails a group photo of the group and a write-up on how the Hwa Chong group was the ONLY all-chinese group in the competition, yet they still managed to clinch a Gold Award on their 1st time at the SYF for Indian Dance, amongst about 10 other competitors!

Featured Athlete of the Week: Liza Ng

HCunite interviewed Liza Ng, the vice captain of the Track & Field Team, to find out more about the story behind her 1st placing in the High Jump event and 6th placing in Long Jump event, as well as the commitment and dedication of her Track team.

1) How did your interest in track & field begin? What ignited your
passion for it?

My reasons for joining Track & Field in Sec 1 were quite boring and
uninspiring. I actually went into it quite clueless about what it
involved, and it was only until much later that I began to enjoy what
I was doing. High jump has been my main event all along, but I also
trained for long jump this year as we were short of long jumpers.

2) How do you prepare for your competitions?

Trainings aside, I sleep more and avoid worrying excessively about the
competition. The longer you think, the less you know what to do.

3) Your results- Gold Medal for High Jump and 6th Placing for Long
Jump- is indeed commendable! How do you balance your academic
commitments, and pursuit for excellence in track?

Thank you! However, there are many athletes whose efforts go unnoticed
because they do not outperform others during competitions. Their
commitment is equally, if not more, deserving of
featured-athlete-of-the-week acknowledgment. What meant more to me
than winning the medal or finishing in 6th position was breaking my
personal bests in both events. It would not have been enough to beat
other competitors if I weren't able to first beat myself.

I won't claim to balance schoolwork and training as I tend to focus
more on one over the other depending on which happens to be of higher
priority at that moment. The rest of the time, I stay sane with a
little help from my friends and teammates.

4) I'm sure your journey thus far must have been a tough one. Were
there any downturns you faced at any point? If so, how did you
overcome it?

I wouldn't really describe my journey thus far as tough, but when I
started out, I was quite demoralised because I was frankly quite
hopeless at high jump—my teammates can testify to that! However, I
have been quite lucky to train under two coaches whom I cannot thank
enough: Mr Pedro, who believed in me when I didn't, and subsequently,
Mr David Woon, who made me believe in myself. Without them and my
teammates, my journey would have taken a very different route.

5) Any words to aspiring athletes out there or to your track & field
teammates and juniors? :)

Be very patient; in the meantime, don't doubt yourself. Train hard so
that there won't be anything to regret at the end. And make sure you
enjoy what you are doing! That is most important.

Match Report: Netball HCI vs JJC

The Hwa Chong netballers faced off against Jurong Junior College yesterday afternoon at Kallang Netball Centre, emerging victorious with a score of 49-29.

The match started off strongly for the HC girls as we took the lead from the start, scoring 20 goals to 5 for the 1st quarter. However, JJ attempted a comeback and the HC team found themselves having lost the 2nd and 4th quarter, 9-10 and 10-11 respectively. Fortunately, the girls managed to hold on to the lead with the efforts in the 1st and 3rd quarters, where we widened the gap by scoring 7 goals more than our hardworking opponents, 10-3.

Our basketball girls followed up their win against TJC 2 days ago, with a comprehensive 76-24 victory against MI! The basketball girls team are gunning for their 2nd consecutive championship this year.

Our squash boys and girls team, achieved a quadraple 5-0 scoreline each, with their victory today against AJC and NJC repectively, despite the absence of key player Jillian Lye, who was kept out of the girls' team's game with an eye infection.

Match Report: Track & Field, Finals

First event of the day was the A-Boys high jump and 3 out of the 17 competitors were from Hwa Chong! Jun Yang and Qi Han jumped with grace, and finished 4^th and 5^th respectively, while Aaron managed to clinch 2^nd, despite not attaining his Personal Best (P.B).

A-Div High Jump Boys:
Aaron Koh – 189cm (2^nd)
Tan Jun Yang – 175cm (4^th)
Wong Qihan – 175cm (5^th)

A-Div 100m Girls:
Chong Jia Yuan – Lane 4 12.68s (2^nd)
Lee Jia Wen – Lane 6 13.11s (4^th)

For 100m Girls, Jia Yuan and Jia Wen managed to clinch the 2nd and 4th placing. Both of them fought fiercely in the race, with Jia Yuan finishing within a fraction of a second from the eventual winner.

800m Girls was spectacular as we were proud to see 3 HC girls running in the finals. The race started with all 3 of them in the leading pack, fighting for glory to the school. At the last stretch, Melvis managed to pull away from the pack, striving for 3^rd position, but eventually finishing the race in 4th place. Francoise and Sheila also made us proud by achieving 6^th and 8^th position respectively!

A Div 800m Girls:
Melvis Lim – 2:34.72 (4th)
Francoise Lee – 2:37.60 (6^th)
Sheila Cheng – 2:39.35 ( 8^th)

Next, it’s time for our A-Div boys to also show results of their grueling trainings. For 1500m Boys, our boys, Jianrui, Wei Jie and Zhen Yang, maintained in front of the pack for the first 800m, but the last 700m were the determining moments. Our students cheered as our athletes were running in front of the stand, and Wei Jie even waved back to the crowd before making his dash to the finish. HC Unite correspondents grabbed to opportunity to ask what his feelings were as he waved back to the crowd.

Wei Jie: It was cool. I think I sped up too early, but it’s okay. Thanks for your support. Thanks

A Div 1500m Boys:
Li Jianrui – 4.33.53 (6^th)
Tiong Wei Jie 4:33.82 (8^th)
Lee Zhenyang – 4:50.56 (15^th)

Last in the day’s event were relays. Our 4x100m Girls were up first, and the most exciting moment of that race was when Jia Yuan caught up with VJC at the last stretch, clinching the silver medal.

A Div 4x100m Girls:
51.04s - 2^nd Placing

Then, it was the 4x400m Race. Striving to meet expectations, our female athletes put up a strong fight at the start, and eventually maintaining at 2^nd position after the 2^nd runner. At every bend, our students cheered with invigoration, celebrating the lead that our girls had over the other runners, and cheering on our runner to overtake and achieve 1^st position. Though it did not manage to occur, we are still proud of what our girls can achieve!

A Div 4x400m Girls:
4:17.48 – 2^nd Placing

Last event of the day was the 4x400m Boys. With the crowd cheering as wildly as ever, the athletes ran with their might. We were especially delighted at the very last stretch of the race, when our runners managed to catch up from the 5^th position to the 3^rd, gaining our medalist position!

To round off the day, our Track Captain, Naisheng, has something to exclaim: “Although we did not reclaim the championship title we lost last year, I am still pleased with the team’s performance as everybody did their best during training sessions and the nationals competition. We were a little unlucky for a few events this year but I am sure next year’s team has the hunger and drive to succeed in regaining the title.”

Match Report: Table Tennis

Today, Yishun Sports Hall was the battlefield for the titanic clash between our table tennis players and the team from Raffles Institution Junior College. Our paddlers faced up against our traditional rivals in both the A division boys and girls championships.

The teams were neck-and-neck throughout both matches, making for truly nail-biting contests that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The boys team got off to a steady start when Jie Yan secured the first singles with a set score of 2-1. Our girls were bested in the first match-up but rebounded solidly by winning the first doubles by a convincing margin.

By the third match-up, our boys were up by two games to one, with star paddler Zhang Sai laying waste to the opposing side, while our girls had gotten ahead by the same margin with their win in the second singles match. Confidence and spirit were high for the Hwa Chong crowd as the cheers kept on coming for our team, but unfortunately the tide began to turn against us as the mettle and skill of our rivals started to show through.

Meanwhile, our boys came within striking distance of securing the second doubles match-up, but were agonizingly disappointed in a fiercely competitive face-off that saw our boys losing the set by 13 points to 11. Kudos to the paddlers, Leonard and David, who demonstrated true Hwa Chong spirit by striving hard to chisel away at their opponent’s initial 4-point lead and not giving up the set without a good fight.

It all boiled down to the final match-ups for both championships, and it turned out that it was just not meant to be for our persevering paddlers. Our last boys singles player Jia Yang, despite valiant effort and impressive skill, was soundly beaten by rival paddler Ben Teo, while the aggressive and flamboyant style of the Raffles female paddler proved effective against the measured and skilled technique of our top seed Wan Ling.

Though the championship titles were just that little bit beyond our paddler’s reach this year, the skill, determination and sportsmanship that our players demonstrated under pressure are proof enough of their distinction in their sport, and truly make them winners in their own right.

The Hwa Chong Track & Field team concluded their journey of competing in the Track Nationals which spanned over 9 days. Despite facing strong competition and mishaps of many athletes sustaining injuries, the HC team put their best foot forward in the last leg of Nationals and attained 2nd position for the A'Div girls, and 3rd position for the A'Div boys.

In today's battle for the coveted title of National Champions, the HC Table Tennis team fought hard and has thus emerged as the 1st-runner ups for both the boys and girls team. The narrow scoreline today was similar across both gender teams at 3-2, ending in heartache for many, especially the team. However, the Table Tennis team has achieved commendable results in their unrivalled performance through their journey thus far, which was concluded in today's finals.

SYF Report: Chinese Dance

After months of grueling practices, injuries and sleep deprivation, the Chinese Dance Society performed their SYF piece <<武陵春。梦>> on the esteemed stage of the University Cultural Centre on Wednesday, 22nd April 2009. They faced tough competition from 64 other schools, but were able to clinch Hwa Chong’s very first Gold With Honours Award this year.

They would like to thank the school management and their teachers-in-charge, 张老师 and 刘老师 for their guidance, the Calligraphy Club for their help with the props, as well as MAD for their compromises. Finally, they would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to their instructor, 杨老师, without whom it would have been impossible to achieve this honour.

Having played with Yishun Junior College before, the team was optimistic of a win, but nonetheless the team still gave their all despite their confidence. The quarter scores are 15-1, 21-3, 10-5 and 10-3 and line-up are as follows:

Despite putting up a brave fight against their opponents,our soccer girls team emerged second best in a game which MJC won narrowly by a scoreline of 1-0.

The team were unlucky to concede a late goal in the last 10 mins of the game, as the game seemed to be destined to end as a stalemate, which would have been a fairer reflection of the gameplay.

In a close fight, Jia Yuan emerged the silver medallist in the 200mfinal with a timing of 00:26.19, bettering her performance in lastyear's final, where a fall forced her to settle for the bronze medal. Samantha also ran 00:28.31 to finish in the 6th position.

Match Report: Touch Rugby Boys

On April 20 2009, our very own Hwa Chong Touch Rugby guys team made history by playing our ever first game against SJI.

The game started with both teams adopting a cautious approach. After a few minutes, Ang An Rui, from 09S69, with a sudden burst of speed and inspiration, opened the scoring. The game opened up after that, with the tempo rising with every minute. The first half ended 4-1 in Hwa Chong's favour. The second half was equally electrifying, with both teams going all out to win the game.

After the game, the team asked for the actual scoreline,having lost count, only to be told that the score was a "double digit to 1". Apparently the referee lost count as well! This mirrored how the girls did against the SJI girls as well, when they won with a scoreline of 16-0. With a game played and an emphatic victory in the bag, the guys touch rugby team has certainly proved to one of quality. Please continue to show them your support and watch out for future games to come!

Louisa and Fanli ran 05:15.06 and 05:26.92 to finish in the 4th and
6th positions respectively. Despite a late surge, Emelyne missed the
8th position by a slight margin.

A-Boys 400m Final:

Cui Naisheng (08S6Q) - 00:50.79 (1st)

Living up to his nickname "Robocop", Naisheng came from behind in a
stunning finish, overtaking 2 runners in the last 100m to win the gold
medal despite only being in 4th position at the 250m mark.

Unfortunately, the end of the stunning finish was not captured by the
photographer, former HC sprinter Leong Yuan Chang, as he was just too
excited.

Fortunately, the Straits Times were there to cover the man of the moment :)

A-Girls 100m Hurdles Final:

Kelly Tan (09S71) - 00:16.69 (3rd)

Despite racing against older competitors, the small and petite Kelly
proved to be a giant inside, winning the bronze medal in a time of
00:16.69.

A-Boys 110m Hurdles Final:

Tommy Kee (09S73) - 00:16.95 (8th)

Despite encountering problems at the 7th hurdle, Tommy managed to
break his personal best and finish within the top 8, contributing a
crucial point to the divisional ranking.

A-Girls Long Jump Final:

Lee Hui Fun (09S73) - 4.78m (5th)
Liza Ng (08S6H) - 4.72m (6th)
Sim Chai Ping (08S78) - 4.13m

Hui Fun and Liza broke their personal bests to finish in the 5th and
6th positions, even though long jump was not either of their main
events. Unfortunately, Chai Ping's first two jumps went unmeasured as
they were foul jumps, while her last jump was severely underboard,
barring her from entering the top 8. She is still a winner to us.

A-Girls 4x400m Relay Heats:

Hwa Chong Institution - 04:22.44

Melissa Wee (09S74), Samantha Raeburn (09A16), Goh Chui Ling (09A11)
and Melvis Lim (09S64) ran 04:22.44 to emerge the fastest qualifying
team in the 4x400m relay.

A-Boys 4x400m Relay Heats:

Hwa Chong Institution - 03:36.32

After narrowly missing out on qualification for the 4x100m relay
finals, John Yeo (09S71), Aran Atsuo (08A12), Choo Shi Jun (08S6Q) and
Joel Chia (09S68) ran a determined 03:36.32, exceeding expectations by
emerging the second fastest qualifying team in the 4x400m relay.

A-Boys Shot Put Final:

Lim Zhuo Yan (08S6Q) - 17.11m (1st, NR)
Cai Jiashen (09A16) - 15.36m (2nd)
Lim You Jie (09A13) - 14.43m (4th)

Zhuo Yan threw 17.11m to eclipse the old championship record of
16.79m, which was set by former HC thrower Scott Wong last year.
Jiashen and You Jie also finished in the 2nd and 4th positions,
reaffirming the boys team's dominance in the throws events.

A-Girls Javelin Final:

Ling Pei Lih (09S7K) - 28.75m (5th)

Pei Lih, our only competitor in the A-Girls Javelin event, did us
proud by finishing in the 5th position.

Match Report: Canoeing

After three days of intense heats and semi-finals, the A division boys team advanced into the finals to face traditional rivals NJC and ACSI, seeking to restore the glory of the previously much-heralded Hwa Chong Canoeing team.

The day kick started with Mervyn Toh racing in the K1 1000m event. Despite the presence of four paddlers from the national team, many of whom are medalists on the regional level, Mervyn fought hard and came in 5th.

In the K4 1000m race, our K4 crew paddled a calculated race, with their afternoon race in mind, coming in 4th, easing past fast starters RJC to come in a second behind ACJC.

Next Daniel Soo and Cao Zhehou started their race in the C2 1000m event. Before long, it was clear that the fight was between PJC, NJC and HCI. The three were still leveled at the 250m mark and the race ended with HCI coming in 3rd, trailing behind PJC by only a slight margin.

The highlight of the morning was the K2 1000m event in which our very own national team talent Samuel Chin and Ho Hin Yang participated. After an explosive start, the pair showed no trouble in holding traditional powerhouse NJC off and the race turned into a duel between HCI and ACSI, another national team pair. However an astounding end burst by the ACSI pair caught HCI off guard and we eventually emerged 2nd in this event.

Shao Fei raced in the first event of the afternoon- the K1 500m event. Once again, HCI triumph over MJC and came in 5th in this extremely difficult race, losing to the 4th placing by a mere 2 seconds.

The fight was on again for Daniel and Zhehou in the C2 500m event. The paired displayed remarkable resilience and their spectacular ending shoot brought them a silver medal, leaving NJC to take the bronze and PJC a split second ahead.

Unfortunately, the fastest race of the afternoon, the K4 500m event, which was incidentally the K4’s stronger event, was marred by rather negligent officiating as the umpires failed to notice the highly conspicuous false start by our own K4 (committed to cope with wind conditions). Reacting very badly to the ensuing confusion (having expected a restart), they still came in agonizingly close to a medal, mere centimeters behind bronze medalist ACJC in one of the closest race in the competition.

Despite dropping crucial points in an expected triumph for Hwa Chong, the last event of the day put our championships prospects beyond doubt with our 2 HCI boats scoring nearly a third of our total points in the K2 500m event. Samuel and Hin Yang showed their intent from the start with a blistering burst and led from start to finish, obtaining the gold medal. The second HCI pair Oon Shui Kun and Mervyn Toh also displayed a brilliant effort, edging over NJC in the final stretch and charged onto the podium with a bronze medal.

With 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze, 1 fourth and 2 fifths, HCI boys teams accumulated 34 points in the team championship and is the 2nd runner up for Canoeing National Schools Championship 2009 with a comfortable lead of approximately 15 points over 3rd runner up SAJC. Considering that a significant proportion of the total points garnered were from the juniors, the 2010 championships should see a continuation of our canoeing team’s decent showing this year.

This movie, based on a true story, is about the USA Hockey team of the 1980 Winter Olympics, which was represented by a group of college kids who were put together about 6 months before the tournament.

The USA last won the hockey gold in 1960. For the next 20 years, international hockey was dominated by USA’s cold war adversary – USSR. They even managed to thrash the NHL All-Stars team which consists of the best professional hockey players from all over the world. Coach Brooks was charged with the duty of leading this ragtag USA team which no one believed in from day one, hence the title ‘Miracle’.

This movie proceeds to tell the story of how they overcame all the obstacles in their dream for glory. Whether or not they achieved this dream was inconsequential – the true lessons were learnt from the struggles along the way, and not about the destination in the end.

I would like to recommend this movie to all sports teams as it touched on almost all issues a sports team will have – injuries, friction among teammates, self-doubt, coach’s selection dilemma, underdogs, team spirit, fighting spirit – most importantly, what’s truly important in competing and self-belief.

Watching this movie would not make you a champion overnight, but it will show you what it takes to be one. Be inspired.

Season Preview: Chinese Dance Society

On April 22rd, the Chinese Dance Society will be taking part in the biennial SYF!

In past weeks, this bevy of dancers has indubitably sacrificed much time and effort in honing their skills and synchronizing every step to the correct beat. Boasting 27 passionate dancers who wield the spirit of breaking boundaries, Hwa Chong Chinese Dance is all geared to put up a spectacular show. Under the tutelage of Madam Yang Jing Feng, an alumnus of the renowned Beijing Dance Academy, these dancers have no doubt set eyes on bringing home the highest honour achievable!

In the month following SYF, do look out for Dance Night’09, an annual dance concert held in collaboration with M.A.D! These dance enthusiasts will then introduce you to the myriad of Chinese Dance styles; from Folk, Classical to Contemporary.

Besides these performances, do keep a look out for them in other school events as well! These include Festival of Arts, Teachers’ Day and Mid Autumn Festival!

Despite it being his second final in a day, Shi Jun put in a
commendable effort to finish 4th with a timing of 10:49.42. Gary also
finished within the top 8.

Tong Zi Heng (08S6V) - 41.44m (4th)
Zhang Yumeng (08A13) - DNQ

Alan won the discus event with a throw of 47.61m, a whole 4m further
than the next competitor. Zi Heng also finished in the 4th position
with a throw of 41.44m.

In today's final leg of the Canoe Nationals, the canoe team brought glory to the school with their performance in today's finals. The boys' team emerged as 2nd runner-ups in the overall placings. Although the girls team did not attain placings in the top 3, we were very sure they gave it their best shot they still performed well in their individual events as follows:

In the Netball girl's opening match to their upcoming season, the team played against VJC where winning this match was a close shave with a score of 33-30.

However, the victory was marred by a knee injury to Goal Shooter Jaime Lye 5 minutes into the match. Let's wish her a speedy recovery!

Match Report: Wushu Finals

In the National Inter-School Wushu Championship 2009 started on the 1st of April and concluded on the 15th of April, with Hwachong emerging as the Overall Champions for the ‘A’ division boys and ‘B’ division boys and took home the challenge trophies for the respective divisions. While the ‘B’ division boys defeated traditional rivals Chung Cheng High (Main), our ‘A’ division boys managed to clinch the overall championship award despite stiff competition from powerhouses VJC, MJC and other rivals such as AJC.

The day began with high hopes of obtaining more medals for our team events to defeat our competitors by a clear margin. In the Group Quanshu event, our ‘A’ boys had a hard fight with VJC, managing to draw with VJC for the 1st placing in raw score, losing only by a small margin. We obtained a silver medal for the Group Weapon event as well, in spite of minor fumbles. Even though we conceded 2 gold medals for our final 2 events, our achievements in the individual events paid off and we managed to defeat 1st runner-up VJC by 1 point and unseat the defending champion from 2008, MJC.

Match Report: Touch Rugby Finals

Our school’s touch rugby girl’s team participated in the inaugural Nationals Inter School Touch Rugby championships at Turf City yesterday at 4.30 pm. Having been undefeated throughout the course of their season, the girls went into the game as outright favourites. Throughout the years, the touch rugby team has achieved stellar results in various touch rugby encounters such as the M1 Touch Rugby competition in which they have already won for 3 consecutive years. Undeniably, the team is both physically and mentally triumphant to give it their very best shot in today’s finals.

The team had to endure a punishing 2 consecutive games fixture in a single day against the likes of traditional powerhouses such as National Junior College (NJC) and Millenia Institute (MI) respectively. However, the morale of the team was well-boosted with the arrival of a substantial amount of supporters, including the school’s very own cheers ic and song ic, Ivan Ho and Yao Hui. Such strong support was clearly absent from the other teams present at the competition and was clearly indicative of the united school spirit the school boasts.

As the sun shone its intense ray onto the luscious greens of the turf city pitch, our girl’s team were hyped up for their first game against their biggest rival yet, NJC. The game was rather close at the start, with both teams forcing each other to commit several mistakes such as the dropping of the possession of the ball. However, as the game proceeded, the difference in class of both teams began to show as the team’s captain, Nicola Koh scored the first try around 10 minutes into the game.

As the NJC players began to show signs of fatigue, our players were simply outpacing and outplaying the opposing team. With the game progressing into the second half, the score gap started to widen, with vice-captain Kendra Tang doing her bid to help place the team onto the scoreboard by scoring 2 tries throughout the match. Nicola then further showed NJC why Hwa Chong was such a fearsome team by scoring another 2 tries. NJC then scored a late consolatory try but the results were clear to all, that the team has emerged victorious against NJC in this feisty encounter. 5-1 is the final score.

After a 30 minutes break, the team had to now pit themselves against MI. While the MI players were evidently more physically well-built, our players were determined to win this match to stake their claim as the rightful champions of touch rugby. With the cheers roaring from the spectators’ area, the team was fired up and raring to go. The second match paved the way for the younger J1 players such as Claudia Sng, Joleen Lee and Tay Xingxuan to have more playing time to allow time for over-exerted players in the first game to take sufficient rest.

For a long period in the first half, the score was at a stalemate. However, it was clearly evident that our players were engaging in a much more aggressive game play, most probably from the astute tactical genius of their coach, Karen. More notably, players such as Tan Ze Lei and Valerie Goh showed their pace and vision for the ball as they distinguished themselves from the MI players by outclassing them. Though MI showed glimpse of brilliance, the disciplined defence of Hwa Chong prevented them from keeping to their game plan and constantly disrupted the flow of their game.
Very soon, the first try came from the young uprising star of Hwa Chong touch rugby team, Joleen Lee. More signs of superiority came when both captains of the team, Kendra Tang and Nicola Koh scored 4 tries amongst them to further their lead to 5. Unfortunately, the team conceded a late try to MI before the final whistle signalled the end of the competition.

The girls team really showed their grit and determination by overcoming all odds to win both fixtures. The supporters also went into a state of frenzy as the coveted title was finally awarded to the deserving team.

Liza broke her personal best twice and Chui Ling overcame an ankle
injury to her jumping leg to clinch the gold and silver medal
respectively, beating their opponents by a respectable margin. Marie
also broke her personal best but lost the 4th position on the
countback rule, saving their coach Mr David Woon some money.

A-Boys 4x100m Relay Heats:

With the loss of a main runner due to injury, the boys 4x100m relay
team's placing of 3rd in their heat was not enough to proceed to the
final.

The girls 4x100m relay team won their heat and qualified for the final on 23/4.

Match Report: Soccer Girls HCI vs TJC

The Hwa Chong Soccer girls celebrated their first win yesterday, 15 April 2009, after sealing a 2-0 victory over TJC.

One goal in each half proved to be the difference between the two teams at the end of 70 minutes. After dominating the match for much of the first half, HCI finally took the lead when striker #2 Mao Yezhen was rewarded for her efforts when she accelerated to meet vice-captain #13 Sarah Ng’s cross ahead of the opponents’ goalkeeper and finished off with a close-range strike.

The HC girls came out after half-time with the same spirit and again dominated the match, despite rampant cheering from travelling TJC supporters. Team HC threatened to get the second goal with every attack and was eventually awarded a free-kick near the left corner flag after a handball by a TJC player. Captain #9 Lynette Seow scored from the resultant free kick, thus securing the crucial second goal for the team.

Overall, Team HC played well and we will build on this result for subsequent matches. The team will be playing a critical match against MJC next Wednesday, 22nd April 2009. The match will be held at MJC at 1500 hrs. All supporters are welcomed.

The HC Tennis Team opened up the field today with a resounding 5-0 home-ground victory over opponents SRJC, setting the table for an exciting season indeed.

George Guan of 09S6D represented HC in the 1st singles, powering past his opponent with his mercurial tactics and deep ground strokes to quickly rack up an 8-0 lead, and a decisive 9-1 finish against a bewildered opponent.

Played simultaneously along with the 1st singles, the 2nd singles was lengthier, but by no means prosaic. In this one-sided match Gabriel Nio of 09S76 soundly silenced his opponent with a final score of 9-2 to clinch the second point for HC.

In the 1st doubles, Wilson Lee Shu fan and Leon Lee gave the audience a feast for the eyes with a dazzling display of smashes, volleys and service aces that stunned both the opponents and their linesmen. Though their first season playing together as partners, both players overcame the baptism of fire and followed through from a 6-3 lead to conclude the match at 9-3.

Oei Jun Long and Janus Low represented HC in the 2nd doubles. The start of the match saw a quick (3-0) lead by the pair, such was their teamwork. However during the later stages of the match the duo began to lose their focus, allowing their opponents to clinch some much needed points to push the game to (7-4). The lapse however, was quickly shrugged off by both players, who swiftly ended the match with a convincing 9-6 victory.

The 3rd singles, where teams normally concentrate their strength, saw Alvin Loh from 08S70 pitted against an opponent that just got steadier as the match progressed. However, even this boon was to no avail as he was no match for Alvin’s powerful play and merciless service and quickly yielded 9-3 to the team captain. The coup de grace was delivered and Hwachong Tennis emerged victorious! Congratulations!

With his recent stellar achievement of obtaining the gold medal in the last Wushu Individuals Championship, Dunyang has been talent spotted to be interviewed as our Athlete of the week to be featured on HC Unite! Read on to find out more on this budding athlete through a mini email interview conducted. :)

1) How did your interest in wushu begin? What ignited your passion for it?

Seniors! When I was in high school, I joined Wushu half-heartedly (actually I joined cause my friend was interested...), but I soon realised that it's really fun, cause the seniors in high school were really cool and they made training very enjoyable (and tough). I would always remember the times when they executed their jumps and flouted their flexibility :) It inspired me to train harder and to someday reach their level of competence.

2) How do you prepare for wushu competitions?

As the competition nears, I would usually start doing checks on the more difficult movements of my competition routine, to ensure that I would be able to nab the landings of the jumps confidently and not panic one day before competition... Also, as Wushu is a demonstration sport, what most of us would do is to video ourselves or to ask our teammates to look at our routines. This way, we would be able to help each other spot mistakes and to correct our postures for each other.

3) Your results- Gold Medal for Wushu Individuals Championship- is indeed commendable! How do you balance your academic commitments, and pursuit for excellence in wushu? Share with us your secret in doing so! : D

Thank you! But I think I can't answer this question, cause I can't say that my results are anywhere near terrific... :P Anyways, during competition period, I would just prioritize and hand in important work, otherwise I would just inform the teachers, to avoid their wrath...

4) I'm sure your journey thus far must have been a tough one. Were there any downturns you faced at any point? If so, how did you overcome it?

Considering what my teammates have gone through, I think my setbacks were pretty minor. The most significant being minor muscle injuries that lasted for weeks. Hence, I think I'm rather fortunate and I cherish that a lot :)

5) Any words to aspiring wushu athletes out there? :D

The initial training is tough and dry, but don give up! Keep an open mind, perfect the techniques and soon you'll understand why we love Wushu so much :D

6) Last but not least, are you still single and available? :)))

This is a very sensitive question, but if I don answer people will say I'm scheming, so I'll say I'm single...

Season Preview: Track and Field

The Hwa Chong Track & Field team boasts a rich legacy of success built upon the dedication, commitment and passion of generations ofseniors. Its 64 members, comprising sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers,throwers, and middle distance and cross country runners, have been training fervently towards the team's common goal of winning the team championships, in the process setting personal bests in their individual events.

While training can be physically and mentally exhausting at times, ournever-say-die spirit and enthusiasm keeps us going, and serves as adriving force for the team. Last year, the girls team won the team championship for the first time since 2002, and the boys team emerged a stronger and more determined team after finishing as 2nd runner-ups. This year's season, from April 13-23, proves to be a challenging one because of the shorter preparation time owing to the rescheduling of the 2-week competition from July to April.

Nonetheless, in preparation for the 50th National Schools Track & Field Championships 2009, the team has participated in the four Allcomers Meets organised by the Singapore Athletic Association, as well as the SPH Schools Relay Championships 2009, with the girls4x200m relay team clinching silver in the latter. The team promises to continue the tradition of excellence and and end with a strong finish,without any regrets.

Match Report: Table Tennis

HCTT edged closer to their double champions goal with 3-2 and 3-1 victories over their opponents in the A’Div Boys and Girls semi-finals matches respectively.

In the A’Div Girls Match, Liauw Wan Ling spearheaded the first singles of the encounter with NYJC. Her ferocious aggressive playing style and steady defensive strategies were sufficient in seeing off her opponent in straight sets. Next up was the doubles pair of May Tan and Han Yu Shi. The comeback queens, as evident from the previous match of which they saved 2 match points in, struggled to reach top form at the crucial moments and eventually fell to the NYJC counterparts 9-11, 9-11, 10-12.

The second singles was played by the team ace player Kwa Hui Qi. Hui Qi, who suffered her first defeat in the last match, was clearly distracted by her loss and swiftly found herself 2-0 down in the mach. However, with the reassurance of the coach and the support of her teammates, she regained her confidence and more importantly, her cool and composure, clawing her way back to turn the tables 3-2. This proved to be the pivotal point of the semi- finals match, as the second doubles pairing of Evelyn Koh and Wang Xun easily wrapped things up with a 3-1 victory, propelling the A’ Girls into the finals.

The A’Div Boys match was a fierce and competitive encounter though the eventual scoreline flattered our opponents. Leong Yun Hao was once again given the responsibility to play the first singles. Yun Hao was stunned as his opponent took the first set against the run of play. However, Yun Hao steadied himself and relied on his swift and powerful forehand and backhand drives to see off his opponent 3-1.

The first doubles featured Mark Hee and David Wong. In this tight and feisty battle, the duo was unable to convert their chances during important points despite taking the match to their opponents for large periods, and was made to pay for their mistakes as they lost 1-3. Zhang Sai took on the second singles and despite a shaky start, he remained sharp like before, dispatching his opponents in the most one-sided match of the semi-finals encounter.

It was then up to Yap Chun Kai and Kenneth Ler to dash NJ’s bid to enter the finals as the duo played the second doubles. Suffering from back-to-back defeats, the pair was determined to make this match count for them. Their resilience paid off as they came back twice down to level the scores at 2-2.

In the deciding set, the pair led 9-7 after a quick succession of points which included precise defending and accurate shotmaking. However, a net ball winner which went against their way diverted the momentum to the NJ pair, and despite saving three match points, they were unable to take the match. Therefore, the burden of the last singles was yet again left on Lim Jie Yan. Jie Yan showed no signs of mercy to this opponent, finishing the match in straight sets in approximately 10 minutes.

The first quarter begin and HC took the lead quickly with a goal scored by Vice Captain Yip Yang(#4). However, RI responded with a goal soon after. Score 1-1.

In the 2nd quarter, RI pulled away with 3 quick goals before a goal by Dominic(#2) pulled Hwa Chong back to within 2. HC was constantly kept in the game with several brilliant saves by our goalkeeper Ching To, who drew loud applause from the spectators with his bare hands which stood between the net and the ball. Score 2-4.

In the 3rd quarter, a resurgent HC team spurred on by the Ares and Apollo C1 classes as well as the Student's Council, reduced the score deficit when Jun Song(#6) and Davin(#3) grabbed a goal each. Davin's goal was in particular, a long range howler which got the supporters on their feet in jubilation. Score 4-5.

In the final quarter, with 5 minutes left on the clock and the score at 5-7, Dominic surged ahead on a HC attack but his shot attempt was saved spectacularly by the RI goalie. This led to a quick counter attack by RI and a goal mouth scramble which resulted in a goal for RI, as the ball trickled over the goal line. A quick response by Captain Zhi Hong(#9) was unable to inspire the team to mount on, what could have been, a famous comeback. Final Score 5-8.

As the players emerged from the waters, they were overwhelmed by emotions no words could possibly describe.

But what our team have shown to all who were present at the match, was that they were a team of guts and steel that had encapsulated the true essence of fighting spirit.

They were never going to lose anything today, for they had already won the hearts of their schoolmates, classmates and teachers with their determined fervent effort.

Season Preview: Canoe

The Hwa Chong Canoeing team will be participating in the National Inter-School Canoeing Championships from 14 to 17 April.

The competition is divided into two categories, Canoe and Kayak. In the Kayak category, besides our Southeast Asian champions Ho Hin Yang and Samuel Chin contesting the K2 500m and K2 1000m events, we will also rely on talented paddlers like Ng Shu Ren for us to lay claim to the title this year.

Having debuted with a silver medal, hopes are high that he will continue to deliver. While Shu Ren’s associates are more familiar with his goofy grin and easy-going demeanour, like all talented paddlers, he transforms on water; to quote a phrase he often uses, he is… 'no more Mr. Nice Guy'. Shu Ren will partner team captain Shao Fei in the K2 1000m event and he looks set to dominate his individual K1 500m event as well.

Other K paddlers include distinguished J1s Oon Shui Kun, also the first runner-up in the recent annual cross-country meet, and Mervyn Toh, who has already bagged several medals in the past nationals. Last but not least, our K4 crew is made up of Tan Jun Hong, Timothy Tay, Kevin Ng and rising star Leo Bing Yeow.

For the Canoe category, we have new paddlers Ong Wee Keat and Marcus Goh in the C2 500 and 1000m events, as well as veterans Cao Ze Hou and Daniel Soo, a gold medallist pair last year, in similar events. Our C1s comprise of Eric Huang and more notably Leroy Chan. Rather befitting of a highly adept canoeist, Leroy’s uses a tiger-print canoe, which is the subject of much envy. Many capsized boats are often seen in the wake of this speed demon.

Having trained earnestly for the past couple of months, the HC Canoe Team hopes to achieve our targets in this upcoming competition and attain some measure of success.

The 65-strong Hwa Chong College Choir (affectionately termed rioHC)comprises talented musicians and choristers from the country’s top secondary schools. With excellence in music-making as its chief goal,the Choir has garnered top local and international awards under the baton of Ms Lim Ai Hooi. To keep pace with international standards,the Choir has maintained a large and culturally diverse repertoire,which has included songs from Indonesia, Japan, China, France, Latvia and even Cuba in the past year.

In July 2008, the Choir competed in the 5th World Choir Games in Graz,Austria and won two Gold medals in the Folklore and Mixed Youth categories. In addition, the choir emerged as one of the champions of the games by winning the Mixed Youth category.

This year, the choristers have been working extremely hard to continue our tradition of excellence, newly-inducted J1s and seasoned J2s alike. We hope to replicate our seniors’ achievements in 2007 by presenting a good showing at this year’s Singapore Youth Festival on the 5th of May once more!

A’ Div Girls: HCI 4:1 TJC

On the 8th of April 2009, our A’ Div Table Tennis Girls’ Team managed to defeat TJC; the last opponents standing in their way before the semis commences.

Kwa Hui Qi played the first singles for Hwa Chong, against the top player of TJC. Up against a member of a former China provincial team, she just could not find any loophole in her game, losing the match 0:3.

Next up was the first doubles played by May Tan and Han Yushi. Under immerse pressure, the pair showed their immerse determination to win the game, saving 2 match points in the last game to win the match 3:2.

Now on a more even footing, Delfina Kee kept the momentum and swept her opponent off her feet with a swift 3:0 victory.The 2nd doubles by Wang Xun and Evelyn Koh and the last singles by Liauw Wan Ling met no resistance, with both matches ending in a one sided 3:0 victory.

A’ Div Boys: HCI 3:2 RJC

The 9th of April 2009 was a day of ups and downs for the A’ Div Table Tennis Boys’ Team. Facing a pre-final encounter with defending champions RIJC, our A div boys emerged victorious. Leong Yun Hao was set to play the vanguard of HC’s lineup. Set with the task of winning the opening game, Yun Hao entered the match with some pressure, causing him to start off shakily. However, he quickly fell back into his usual all-round tactical play to take the first game. Executing high level counter-offensive forehand drives in the next 2 games; Yun Hao prevailed 3:0, proving his credentials as one of the nation’s U18 top 10 players.

Yap Chun Kai and Kenneth Ler then played the 1st doubles. The pair faced their strongest doubles opponent since the start of the season, playing a very long and tough game. In a tense and engaging encounter, the HC pair was unable to break down their opponents in the last set despite leading twice in the match, eventually going down 2:3. The 2nd singles then featured Zhang Sai playing against another national training team player from RI(JC) who was determined to give Zhang Sai a run for his money. Zhang Sai kept up his ferocious yet steady play, but was unable to stop the opponent from breaking his perfect score streak, winning the match 3:1.

The 2nd doubles was played by HC’s J2 pair, Leonard Leong and David Wong. They started off the game confidently, but the RI(JC) pair defended with great determination. Our doubles could not seem to break the opponents’ game, losing the match 3:1.

There was frisson in the air in the “tiebreaker” of the encounter as Lim Jie Yan faced off against Bob Teo, arguably the best player in the RI(JC)’s camp. With tension mounting at this critical point in time, Jie Yan kept his cool and composure, dispatching his opponent in straight sets, including a seven-point winning streak from 4-8 down in the 2nd set.

With this important victory, the A’ Boys have a slight mental advantage over the defending champions. They will face off with NJC in the semi- finals this coming Monday, 13th April.

The soccer boys team, though determined and hopeful, were unable to break the deadlock against TJC and ended the game 0-0. As such, the team, led by captains Wincoln Tham and Aran Atsuo, desperately need TJC and TPJC to play out a draw in their game on Monday, for the team to go through.

Yet, on a personal note, the soccer team has never failed to amaze me at how they have always been a very united team- one that is made up of individuals who share a common passion for the beautiful game.

As one of the players mentioned, "Don't think, don't hope, don't wish. Let's just play the best we can and see what life has in store for us. Let's just play our part and see what the script has set in store for us. Forget about qualifying, forget about how the other results will play out, forget about even winning or losing."

After a 8-3 win over RJC last Wednesday, the Hwa Chong touch girls played NYJC today.

The Hwa Chong team managed to pull off a 6-0 win. However, during the game, the girls struggled to reach their normal standards and were often outpaced by their opponents.

As such, the NY defenders closed down the space and Hwa Chong found it difficult to quickly advance the ball. Nevertheless, there were some brilliant moments in attack where Hwa Chong managed to utilise their speed to score some significant tries against the NY girls.

Next week, Hwa Chong will be playing a crucial match against NJC; and it promises to be a nail-biting showdown, as both teams have won all their matches so far. This crucial game looks to be the deciding match of the tournament and will be played at 5pm. The girls are pushing hard this week to hit top form and maintain the upper hand in the tournament, hopefully, their efforts will translate into victory and glory.

Season Preview: Guitar Ensemble

It was a rare day of pleasant music aired in the canteen today amidst the usual chatter of voices in the canteen as the Guitar Ensemble showcased their SYF pieces, namely Salut d'amour and Phantom of the Opera's Music of the Night. Soloist, Johnathan Heng also displayed his talent for the guitar through popular classic, Cavatina.

Although today's performance setting was rather small, it still did garner a fair bit of attention and the quality of music was not affected by the space limitations, as can be seen by the receptiveness of the audience. The audience soon gathered and excitedly dragged some canteen benches to get a closer look at what's going on to support their friends who were performing or simply to check out the good music! One could see that all present were enjoying this performance through the smiles of approval on their faces while some cheered enthusiastically for their friends in the ensemble.

Let us continue to support the Guitar Ensemble in their efforts as they strive for their SYF performance which would take place on the 28th of April! Jiayou Guitar Ensemble! :)

The A Division Boys and Girls team placed a foot literally in the semi- finals of the Nationals with 5-0 wins in their first match of the Top 6 round robin round.

In the A’ Div Boys match against JJC, Zhang Sai opened accounts for HC with a convincing 3-0 win over his opponent. He has been our team most consistent player so far, not dropping a single game since the start of the 2009 campaign. Lim Jie Yan, then teed up with Mark Hee to put HC two sets up in the first doubles. Leong Yun Hao, the captain of the Table Tennis team in High School, then cruised to a comfortable straight sets victory over his opponent. Yun Hao was in superb form today, completely demolishing his opposition 11-1, 11-1, 11-5. The next two rounds featured the doubles pair of Leonard Leong and David Wong, as well as Teo Jia Yang (third singles), who masterminded equally impressive straight sets victories over their challengers.
In the A’ Div Girls match against ACJC, Liauw Wan Ling demonstrated the qualities of a captain by leading the rout with a solid 3-0 victory in the opening set of the match. Next up was the doubles pairing of May Tan and Han Yu Shi, who settled the overall match score at 2-0 in the blink of an eye. Kwa Hui Qi, member of the National Training Team, did not disappoint once again with a clinical straight sets triumph over her rival. Wang Xun and Evelyn Koh then swept the second doubles 3:0. Last but not least, Delfina Kee showed her agility and great pace in a 3:1 victory over her opponent.

The A’ Div Girls will face off with TJC tomorrow, 8th April while the A’ Div Boys will have to deal with a pre-final encounter with RJC. Both matches will be played this Thursday, 9th April. Do wish our fellow paddlers good luck when you see them!

Season Preview: Netball

The HC Netball team, comprising of 14 girls, have been training assiduously since November 2008. Majority of the J1s are from different secondary schools, and despite being a very new team, we have trained hard to assimilate into each other’s play and have come a long way since we first started training last year. With such enthusiasm and commitment, the team hopes to enter the finals and dominate the netball arena this year.

We held a netball training camp during the March holidays recently, and had friendly matches with competitors such as SAJC and JJC. The team performed well during these matches and won with a score of 39-31 and 70-29 respectively.

The A Divison season for netball will commence on 17 April 2009.Our toughest competitors for the first round are VJC and AJC, so we hope to have your support during our matches.

The team will continue to work hard in the following 2 crucial weeks before our season. We will remain dedicated to improving as a team and we look forward to bringing good news every week once our season commences.

The Malay Literary Drama and Debating Society (MLDDS) has a host of culturally enriching activities for the year 2009.

Our aims are to explore and promote an appreciation for the Malay culture; to help the underprivileged within our community, with special focus on Malay beneficiaries; to provide leadership development opportunities for members; and to collaborate with other organizations which support the same causes as ours.

This year, we are sending our pioneer team of dancers to participate in the SYF (Malay Dance, Contemporary category) on April 8th. We are also launching the Hwa Chong MLDDS-Malay Heritage Center CIP programme this year as a fresh and fun way to explore the Malay culture while serving the community at the same time. Annual activites like Wau (Malay Traditional Kite) Design competition are also coming up, promising an exciting year ahead for MLDDS. Our partipation in externally organized activities like the 2nd Asean Forum and the Inaugural Asean Youth Mania Camp will also enhance our cultural literacy and leadership development.

It was yet another fruitful haul for the Wushu team on day 3 of the individual events.

The ‘A’ division boys clinched a total of 1 gold, 2 silvers, 1 bronze and 1 4^th placing. Nathaniel Gan of 08S66 managed to clinch the 4^th placing in the 1^st International Nandao event despite stiff competition, while Koh Yee Hong of 09S65 won the silver medal in the 1^st International Broadsword event. Ang Dun Yang of 08S6P, the captain of the Wushu team, and Yee Guang Yi of 08S72 won the silver and bronze medals for the 2^nd International Broadsword event respectively while the vice-captain of the team, Kuo En Yi of 08S75 won the gold medal in the 1^st International Sword event.

The ‘A’ division girls also performed well, clinching a total of 2 silvers and 1 4^th placing. Chia Bih Yee of 09S71 obtained 4^th position for 1^st International Sword while Clarisse Look of 09S70 won the silver medal in the same event. Tan Hui Fang of 09S74 secured a silver medal in the 2^nd International Broadsword event.

Our medal tallies currently put the ‘A’ division boys in 1^st position while the ‘A’ division girls are currently joint 3^rd with rivals Raffles JC. All the best to our athletes in the upcoming events!

The Table Tennis A’ Division Boys and Girls Teams successfully progressed into the Top 6 of the National Championships with 4-1 and 5-0 wins over NYJC and MJC respectively.

The boys’ team’s title credentials were put to a test as they faced off with the strongest school in their round robin group. NYJC was determined to give the boys’ team a run for their money and indeed they proved to be tough opposition as HCI took close to 2 hours before prevailing as winners.

The first singles featured Zhang Sai pitting against NYJC’s best player. Given Zhang Sai’s natural flair, it did not take long before he claimed a straight sets victory over his opponent. The first doubles marked the return of duo pair Leonard Leong and David Wong after their rest in the second round. Despite losing the first game, the pair kept their cool and went on to win the set 3-1.

The third singles witnessed Lim Jie Yan clinch a convincing straight sets victory over his opponent. Jie Yan showed no intention of giving his opponent a chance to dictate the game and has once again proved his worth as an ASEAN Youth Champion.

The second doubles saw Yap Chun Kai and Kenneth Ler taking on the NYJC pairing. Despite claiming a confident 11-7 victory in the first game, the NYJC opponents proved much more aggressive, determined and accurate in their shots today as they silenced the HC camp by turning the tables to win 3-1. In the last singles, Leong Yun Hao showed his mental strength and consistent all- rounded play as he disposed his stubborn opponent 3-2.

The girl's match was a one- sided affair as they thrashed their opponents 5-0 in slightly less than an hour. May Tan took on the reign of playing the third singles today as she powered past her opponent 11-2, 11-0, 11-5 while the doubles pair of Melissa Ho and Jodie Foo celebrated their debut match by winning their clash in straight sets. The other matches featured Kwa Hui Qi, Delfina Kee and Ong Yi Ling, all who had won 3:0 while Liauw Wan Ling fended off her second singles opposition 3:1.

The top 6 round robin will feature the A Boys’ matching up against JJC and RJC while the A Girls’ will meet TPJC and ACJC. The going gets tougher as HCTT moves closer to their double champions goal. Do give them your utmost support in their upcoming matches!

Match Report: Basketball Guys HCI vs RV

With a score of 64-30 against River Valley High School (IP), defending champs Hwa Chong remains undefeated in 'A' Division Basketball.

Much to the crowd's disappointment, the game began with a lethargic start, with both teams scoring below twenty points in the 1^st quarter as Hwa Chong players found themselves struggling with under-basket shots while RV was forced into several shot-clock violations by the Hwa Chong defence.

Entering the 2^nd quarter with a 10-point lead, Hwa Chong attempted to pull away quickly with a couple of good baskets but RV was determined to keep the deficit within 10 points and responded promptly with sharp shooting from #5. This quarter saw a fair share of notable plays and unexpected blunders from both camps and Hwa Chong was kept to below 30 points after 2 quarters.

Returning from the half-time break, Hwa Chong modified their defensive strategies – adopting pro-active man-on-man defense – and put great pressure on RV's guards and forwards. Victory was soon in sight as the change in defensive strategies stifled RV's shooting and quickened Hwa Chong's offensive pace.

Having warmed up sufficiently, the 2^nd half saw Nicholas Tan (#6, guard) delivering a nasty block, Captain Chester Leow (#11, forward) sinking shots from both within and beyond the 3-point arc and Hong Sheng (#10, forward/centre) nailing several baskets from the paint, with timely assistance from Hock Sing (#14, forward/centre) and Subhas (#5, forward/centre). Facilitated by effective passing by the guards, Hwa Chong pulled away with great velocity, scoring nearly 20 points a quarter in the 2^nd half.

Highlighted otherwise by a late-game scoring streak and a powerful block by Ee Ruey (#12, forward/centre), the 4^th quarter was a one-sided affair as Hwa Chong took charge of the match and broke away effectively, winning the game eventually.

Special mention goes to Edward Ng (#15, forward) for repeatedly stopping the RV offense throughout the game with lightning-quick steals and successfully converting them into fast-break points. Edward also dominated the boards with impressive rebounding and achieved a triple-double with 12 rebounds, 10 points and 10 steals (the first by a Hwa Chong player this year!).

Edward Ng was the outstanding player of the game, finishing with a triple double, with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 steals.

Hong Sheng led all scorers with 14 points, while Chester and Subhas finished close behind with 13 and 10 points respectively.

HC emerged victorious against Millenia Institute today, with a scoreline of 1-0.

Several players were rested from the starting lineup after their exertions against SAJC on Monday. However HC still dominated MI from the first minute to the last, with tenacious Captain Wincoln Tham in particular dictating play in the middle of the park and right back Fabian Kho being a pest to both the opponents’ attack and defence.

The first half finished as HC were unable to find the net despite all the pleasing build-up play. At half time, Tay Zeng Hao was brought on the pitch to push for that one elusive goal. 2 minutes later, Zeng Hao guided the ball into the MI net following an impressive display by fans favourite Aran Atsuo. The team continued to dominate the game after the goal and could have scored more if not for their wasteful finishing.

With the quality shown in the last 2 matches, especially that aparticular player, the team is very confident of their chances. Said striker Lee Kwang Yueh, “I think Aran was great today! Not only was his hair swaying gracefully in the air as usual, his shooting was very sharp too. Everyone loves Aran! Go Aran! I think that Aran might just single-handedly bring us all the way to the final!"

M1 TOUCH SERIES

On the 20th of March, Hwa Chong sent in a team to participate in the M1 touch series U17 category. The team, comprising of 10 year 1s emerged as cup champions after defeating RJC 2-0 in the final match. In the first round, our team defeated Pioneer Sec 3-0, Pioneer JC 2-0 and OFS 1-0 to earn a spot in the cup round, bringing them one step closer to reaching the coveted trophy.

In the second round, the team met ACS(int) and RJC who had also topped their groups in the previous round. It was a tough match with ACS(int) and when the final whistle blew, we had to settle with a score of 0-0. Our team went on to meet rivals RJC in an exciting match, with the title on the line. We fought hard, and defended well to emerge as the victors of the match with a score of 2-0 and overall champions of the tournament.

It was definitely a well-deserved victory for the team as we played our hearts out and had not conceded any tries to the opponents throughout the long day. This tournament was the first that the year 1s had participated in and the team is glad to have been able to achieve this title and bring glory to the school. We will continue working hard and strive for greater heights.

Match Report: Fencing

In the National Inter-school Fencing Championships, held on 30^th and 31^st March, the HC Fencing team achieved remarkable results, clinching 4 individual medals in 6 events and the champion team title in the Men’s Sabre event.

Despite this being only the 2^nd year of our existence, the HC fencing team has been dedicated and hardworking in our quest for glory. We faced fierce competition from national fencers and other experienced fencers from rival schools, but managed to emerge the eventual champion in the Men’s Sabre event, ousting traditional Sabre powerhouse RJC, to clinch the champion team award by a margin of 6 points.

The HC Fencing team has been training hard every week under the experienced tutelage of their coaches Wu Jie and Dennis.. With this being only the 1st year of our training, it is our hope that these results will improve in future competitions with further training, and that the Hwa Chong Fencing team will ultimately seek greater heights in the years to come.

Hot off the press: Wushu/Soccer

On day 2 of the Wushu competition, Ang Dun Yang, the captain of the Wushu Team, proved to be amongst the top in the nation, when he took home the Gold award in his 'Changquan 2nd International Routine' individual event. Well done Dun Yang!

In the soccer match between HCI and MI, our soccer boys emerged victorious with a score of 1-0. Tay Zeng Hao scored the only goal in a match which scoreline failed to reflect the dominance of the HC team throughout the game.
